Brain Injury Specialist Certification

BIASC coordinates Brain Injury Specialist training for SC professionals.  After completion of the training, and passing a national certification exam, professionals are allowed to use the credentials of Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS).

Brain Injury Fundamentals

This training and certificate program is designed to address the unique needs and challenges of those who care for individuals with brain injury including direct care staff, facility staff, first responders, family members and friends, or other interested individuals. The course covers the following topics:

  • Cognition

  • Guidelines for Interacting and Building Rapport

  • Brain Injury and Behavior

  • Medical Complications

  • Safe Medication Management

  • Families Coping with Brain Injury

Life with Brain Injury Conference

BIASC collaborates with the SC Brain Injury Leadership Council (SCBILC) to provide the annual Life with Brain Injury Conference each July. This conference provides a forum for the exchange of information on programs, resources, and best practices in brain injury rehabilitation and services. It facilitates opportunities for networking among individuals with brain injuries, family members, and service providers. BIASC often provides scholarships for individuals and caregivers to attend the conference. Providers of brain injury services are present in the exhibit hall to provide resource information to attendees.

Through a series of helpful slides and user-friendly narration, this webinar covers the anatomy and physiology of the brain, the mechanisms and effects of brain injury, what TBI and mTBI (concussion) are, and why you should know the difference, as well as vital facts, figures, and answers to frequently-asked questions.

Anne McDonnell, Executive Director of The Brain Injury Association of Virginia (BIAV), leads the webinar, drawing on 35 years of experience in brain injury rehabilitation and advocacy -- the culmination of which is presented in this comprehensive yet concise video in less than 60 minutes.
